PRESS RELEASE: 6th July 2010
Season update for the Flying Flynns
17
year old Conor Flynn has had mixed fortunes this season.
He had an amazing run on the BRC Jim Clark Challenge rally
[see attached], but suffered electrical gremlins on his
other events. He did set 9th overall and 1st Peugeot on
his 1st ever event in the UK though, before a dead fuel
pump ended his rally.
Looking forward though, this weekend is a BIG weekend
for Conor, he is entered in the Rallyschool.co.uk backed
VW Lupo in the Quinton stages rally near Brecon this Saturday.
The diminutive Lupo, is just 1400cc and bog standard so
Conor is joined by his older sister Ella [19] who will
be on co-driving duties.
Conor fully appreciates the help he gets from PIAA,
Hankook tyres, Revolution Wheels, Washcraft, MotorV8 and
Ice Drive Sweden.com.
To help repay the backing he is taking the 205 on the
Harry Flatters rally at the end of July on the demanding
Epynt army ranges.
Following that the Challenge spec 205 will be seeing
if it can repeat its Giant killing acts on the Jim Clark
with a repeat performance on the BRC Ulster Rally Challenge
on August 20/21.
Back to Wales then and Epynt again for the Mewla rally
on August 28th.
Conor is lucky to have Mark Mason to share his Jim Clark
success, while Andy Bull and Steve McPhee bring masses
of experience to the team.
Ella had her own success in June with a stunning 4th
overall on the BTRDA Dukeries rally and 1st in the Group
N category, Ella was teamed with young hotshot 23 year
old Jamie Anderson in his Evo 8 who shocked the BTRDA
regulars with a storming drive.
Ella will be co driving the Superfast Russ Thompson on
the Harry Flatters, the Dunnow plant backed driver, hoping
to have more luck with his Renault Clio, now the suspension
and drive shaft problems appear to have a cure!!
Keep an eye out for more updates, but it’s a big
GOOD LUCK to Conor & Ella this weekend, this will
see them on their 2nd ever gravel event, 6 miles being
the sum total of the last one!!!!
PRESS RELEASE: June 2010
Fine Tarmac Debut for 17 year old
17 Year old student Conor Flynn with co driver Mark Mason
had a great debut on the recent Jim Clark Rally. The pair
were in their Peugeot 205 in Challenge specification,
[basically Group N], the little 1600cc machine was probably
the lowest powered car in the rally, but a good recce
saw the pair quite happy.
After stage two, the crew were inside the top ten in
ninth place, and swapping times with the quickest Fiestas,
Conor was beaming from ear to ear, saying “ We are
backing off slightly on the jumps as the old Bilstein
suspension doesn’t land too well, but the notes
are brilliant and Mark is brilliant”
The final stage in the dark saw another good run leaving
the crew eighth overnight. Team mate Russ Thompson/Neil
Bye in the Clio R3, were not so happy, with Neil saying”
I could not get to grips with the notes in Abbey, then
a shaft let go at the start of the final Friday stage,
so we are out”
Conor & Mark had a good run through Wedderburn, again
beating many of the more powerful Fiestas, then with the
next stage cancelled they decided to push through the
Eccles stage.
A stunning time for Conor/Mark raised them to fifth Overall
and the class lead, the time was only one second off Pajunen
the rapid Finn who won the yellow jersey on Pirelli rally.
A shame that a slight misfire on the final stage saw
them drop a small amount of time, dropping them one second
behind the class lead, and to eighth overall.
Still a fine debut performance for the 17 year old ex
Rallycross champion.
Mark said, “Conor is very talented and also very
brave, we had a couple of moments, but his car control
caught both of them”
The final comment from Conor “Thanks to the BRC,
Jim Clark organisers and all my crew for getting me round,
I had a brilliant time, Thank you”
Conor will be competing on the Quinton, Swansea Bay,
Ulster and Mewla rallies over the next couple of months.
